Warriors Put Six on All-League Team

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills placed six players on the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference all-conference men's soccer team. And Warriors head coach Doug Seigle was named the men’s co-coach of the year.

Named to the all-conference first team were midfielder Pedro Jurno (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and midfielder/defenseman Cheyne Reiter (LaPorte City), both sophomores; sophomore defenseman Caleb Bemis (Letts) and freshman midfielder Austin Kelly (Ottumwa) on the second team; and sophomore forward Damian Sheerin (West Point) and freshman midfielder Leonardo Teixeira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) on the honorable mention list.

Seigle said all six of the players on the all-conference list played key roles in the first winning season in the history of the IHCC men's program.

“Pedro Jurno was our leading scorer this season despite being a marked man and he came through in the clutch in our big games,” said Seigle. “Cheyne Reiter did a great job making the adjustment from offense to defense this year, making that switch for the team. He can play anywhere, but we needed him to anchor our defense.”

“Caleb Bemis was a solid defender for us, playing all four defensive positions and being the vocal leader on our team,” said the IHCC coach. “And Austin Kelly was our workhorse, working up and down the flanks as a midfielder. He never quit fighting for the ball from the first minute to the last of every game.”

Of the two honorable mention choices, Seigle said, “Damian Sheerin was our second-leading scorer and led the team in assists. He is a scrappy player who works hard and created many opportunities for his teammates. Leonardo Teixeira started every game and played every position, except goalkeeper, for us this season. He was our most versatile player and did a great job of filling any role we asked him to play.”

The IHCC men’s team finished the year at 9-8, winning the first postseason game in the program’s four-year history and setting numerous team records.

Seigle said the Warriors reached many of their goals for the season and “improved a little every day.” “Although we started the season off slowly, we really came together as a team and it showed in our results,” said Seigle. “I am very pleased with the work we put in and the direction our program is going.”

Seigle said he was honored to receive the co-coach of the year award and that it should be shared with his team and assistant coach Rod Campbell. “Rod did a great job during the coaching change and throughout the season. The team bought into my coaching philosophy by working hard to get better every day and playing good defense.” Seigle added, “I had expectations when I was hired in August, but have been very pleased to see us move forward as a program in a very short amount of time.”

IHCC Men Match Women With Postseason 'W'

Ottumwa -- One day after the Indian Hills' women's soccer team posted its first-ever postseason win, the IHCC men's team followed suit with its initial postseason victory. The Warriors blanked Iowa Lakes, 2-0, on Wednesday at the Walsh Soccer Complex in the opening round of the Region 11 tournament.

The win boosts the Warriors' season record to 9-7 and sets up a match against regular-season champ Iowa Western in Des Moines on Saturday. Indian Hills handed Iowa Western a 1-0 loss earlier this month, the Reivers' lone conference defeat.

Against Iowa Lakes, Indian Hills got a goal from Leonardo Texeira just five minutes into the match for an early 1-0 lead. Gustavo Souza assisted on the goal. And IHCC coach Doug Seigle said the early goal was a key. "It was very windy and we got the early goal against the wind," Seigle said. "In the second half, we dominated play and got the insurance goal with the wind to nail it down."

The defenses dominated after Texeira's goal until Jeff Kelly added a late goal, in the 85th minute, for the Warriors. Souza had an assist on that goal too.

Marcus Filgueiras was outstanding in goal for IHCC, stopping four Lakers' shots, and controlling play.

Seigle is looking forward to the match with Iowa Western this weekend. "I'm excited," the first-year Indian Hills coach said. "Our team is peaking at the right time."

Jurno Scores Twice in IHCC Win

Marshalltown -- A pair of first-half goals by sophomore Pedro Jurno stood up thanks to some strong goaltending by Marcus Filgueiras as the Indian Hills men's soccer team completed a season sweep with a 2-1 road win on Wednesday.

The victory put the Warriors' season record back at the .500 mark at 6-6, heading into a key matchup with Iowa Western at home on Saturday.

Jurno's first goal came on a free kick just five minutes into the contest. He lofted a winding attempt past MCC keeper Edwin Jovel to put IHCC on the board.

Jurno added another free-kick goal in the 43rd minute of the opening half, when his shot from just outside the penalty box ricocheted off an MCC player and into the back of the net.

With their 2-0 lead intact, the Warriors packed in the defense in the second half. MCC managed to get to within one goal when Eric Mavakala scored from the top of the box in the 75th minute. Filgueiras made some big saves after that as IHCC held on.

Indian Hills defeated Marshalltown 2-1 in overtime earlier in the fall.

The Warriors had 11 shots in the contest, three each by Jurno and Jules Ruremesha.

Indian Hills coach Doug Seigle said, "It was a great win on the road for us. To get the sweep over Marshalltown and get back to .500 for the season means we're really peaking at the right time. If we can stay on a roll we may put ourselves in a great position for the postseason."

First Win Comes in OT for IHCC

Ottumwa -- Damian Sheerin's goal four minutes into overtime allowed Indian Hills to post its first win of the season Wednesday, 2-1 over Marshalltown CC.

Marshalltown's Edwin Martinez had tied the score at 1-all with a goal with a few minutes left in regulation. But Sheerin's game-winner, off a pass from Austin Kelly, came early in overtime and sent the Warriors home happy.

Kelly had scored the first goal for IHCC in the 22nd minute. It was also the Warriors' first goal of the season. Indian Hills had been shut out in its first two matches.

IHCC got a strong performance from goalkeeper Marcus Filgueiras who stopped three MCC shots.

The Warriors take their 1-2 record to Council Bluffs this Saturday for a matchup with Iowa Western.

IHCC Blanked at NIACC

Mason City, IA -- NIACC scored four second-half goals and shut out visiting Indian Hills, 4-0, in ICCAC men's soccer action on Saturday.

After a scoreless first half, NIACC's Marvin Ledgister scored a minute into the second half and the Trojans added three more goals in handing Indian Hills its second straight shutout loss to start the season.

The Warriors will be at home against Marshalltown CC on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00.

Warriors Lose Heartbreaker in Opener

Ottumwa -- Iowa Lakes' Francisco Ochoa tallied the only goal of the game as the Lakers spoiled Indian Hills' season opener on Tuesday at the Walsh Soccer Complex. Ochoa's goal came in the 34th minute and the visitors made it stand up for the 1-0 win.

Indian Hills' goalkeeper Ben Smiley had four saves and the Warriors outshot Iowa Lakes 11-6.

Despite the loss, new IHCC head coach Doug Seigle saw some positive things from his team. "I think we outplayed them as a team and had more talent," said Seigle. "We're just a bunch of individuals learning to play as a team."

The Warriors will travel to Mason City this Saturday to battle NIACC. They will have a chance to avenge Tuesday's loss when they play at Iowa Lakes on Sept. 28.

Three IHCC Men's Soccer Players Sign with 4-Year Schools

Ottumwa -- Five players from last fall’s Indian Hills Community College soccer teams have signed letters-of-intent with four-year schools to continue their education and soccer careers.

From the IHCC men’s team, Ryan Culbertson from Ft. Madison has signed with Grand View University, Aaron Rose from Ottumwa has signed with William Penn University, and Gustavo Scorzelli from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil has signed with Judson University.

IHCC women’s players who will play soccer this fall are Brooke Duea from Earlham with Northwest Missouri State University and Caroline Gagliardi from Sao Paulo, Brazil with Florida Memorial University.

Duea led the IHCC women with 11 goals and added five assists in the 2009 season. Gagliardi had a team-high six assists and five goals. Both were named to the All-Region 11 team.

Culbertson was a first-team All-Region selection and Scorzelli was named Honorable Mention.

Youth Soccer Clinic at IHCC

Ottumwa -- Area youth have been invited to attend a soccer clinic that will be held in the Tom Arnold Net Center on the Indian Hills Community College Ottumwa campus on Saturday, March 13. IHCC head soccer coach Kirk Artist and members of the Indian Hills soccer teams will help with the instruction at the clinic.

The clinic for the U-8 and U-10 age groups will start at 8:30am; the U-12 and U-14 age groups will begin at 1pm.

Those who participate will take part in drills for dribbling, passing/receiving, and shooting.

The Indian Hills soccer teams and Ottumwa Soccer Club are teaming up to provide instruction for the clinic.

Nine from Indian Hills on Academic Squad

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills placed nine players on the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference All-Academic team. The Warriors had four players on the first team and five more on the second team.

Indian Hills players named to the All-Conference All-Academic first team were sophomores Taylor Konrad (Knoxville, IA) and Alex Stauffacher (Burlington, IA)and two freshmen, Pedro Jurno (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Damian Sheerin (West Point, IA).

Second-team selections from IHCC included one sophomore, Miguel Torres (Ottumwa, IA),along with freshmen Isidore Ekukanjuh (Ottumwa,IA), Peter Grossenkemper (Fort Madison, IA), Cheyne Reiter (LaPorte City, IA) and Gustavo Scorzelli (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).
